Training available through the MSTS includes; basic seamanship, (Radio, Coastal Navigation & Pilotage, Sea Survival, Powerboat, Radar, and sail training to name but a few), Small Craft Engineering, (dealing with outboards and small marine petrol and diesel engines, on-board electrics and electronics), Operational Shore-side Support, (which includes the provision of fuel, water, victualling, passage planning and reporting, logistical support, etc.), and to ensure that everything runs smoothly, we also actively train our members in effective leadership. By the end of 2010 we hope to be trained and recognised as Level 4 Emergency Responders. This will be achieved by our Team training with Civil Defence Scotland, the Scottish Ambulance Service and the Lothian & Borders Fire and Rescue Service. Currently in the early stages of development, is a fully mobile pollution containment boom system, which can be deployed within those crucial first few minutes of an incident occuring. We are constantly reviewing and expanding our material, so that each member can be provided with the best training and support that we can provide. We are totally committed to our training being both current, relevant, and directed to the individual learning needs and speeds of our members. Some of the training resources are computer-based, where members can work through a series of presentations at their own speed. Our training syllabus is tailored to meet the needs of the individual, who might not have an academic background. This can take up to two years to complete for those who need that little extra help. |
